Discovering Research Program for High School Students

Area high school teachers are invited to bring junior and senior college-bound students to the Library for an introduction to college library resources. Students will participate in a classroom session which will include:

  • A brief tour of the library
  • A demonstration of the library's online catalog and other electronic resources
  • A discussion of resources students will need for their research
  • A handout which; lists resources students will find useful

After this session, students will be given hands-on experience using both print and electronic resources.

Discovering Research participants have access to the Library's collection, which consists of over 240,000 books, 1,400 current journal subscriptions, and over 11,400 audio-visual items. To access this large collection, students will use the library's computerized catalog, over 60 electronic indexes and abstracts, and other reference sources.

Wisconsin high school students may purchase Special Borrower's Cards for a fee of $5, which will allow them to check out library books. To purchase cards, students should bring their Social Security number and a picture ID.

Interested teachers should call Kimberley Bartosz (595-2730) to make reservations and to discuss the research needs of their classes. At least two weeks advance notice is required; group size is limited to 50 students. Visits may be scheduled for any day during the year, with the exception of two-week periods during mid-terms and final exams (call for exact dates). Teachers are encouraged to make reservations during less busy times such as university breaks or Thursdays and Fridays during semesters. Students will have better access to the library's resources during these periods.
