Mission and Goals

 

Mission

The mission of the Library is to assume an active role in the development of the community's* human resources by implementing fully the concept of a teaching library. The Library aims to fulfill this mission by:

  1. developing an organized collection of materials and equipment and providing access to other resources which best satisfy the present and future needs of the University relating to its teaching, research, and community service responsibilities.

  2. encouraging and facilitating self-directed and life-long learning through the development of instructional programs and services that emphasize problem solving, critical thinking, and investigative skills.

  3. providing distinctive programs and services designed to meet the intellectual and cultural needs of an information-based society.

Goals

  • Goal 1: To plan, develop, and implement policies and programs that are compatible with the University's mission and interpret them to the community.
  • Goal 2: To support the current and future curriculum, research and other information needs of the University by selecting, acquiring, organizing, preserving, and circulating a collection of materials in a variety of formats (e.g. paper, electronic, optical) as well as equipment necessary for its use.

  • Goal 3: To provide comprehensive orientation and instruction enabling all users to locate, evaluate, and effectively use needed information.

  • Goal 4: To interpret the collection to all users, assist them in the utilization of the library's as well as other electronically available databases, provide referral to additional information sources, and supply individualized assistance in using instructional materials.

  • Goal 5: To enrich the University curriculum by collaborating with faculty and staff in the design, development, and production of instructional programs and materials.

  • Goal 6: To assist in the development of a local and inter-institutional academic information management network.

  • Goal 7: To evaluate the collection, programs, and facilities in order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of services.

  • Goal 8: To promote cultural and intellectual activity by offering programs, facilities, and services to the community.

  • Goal 9: To share resources, services, and ideas by cooperating with all areas of the University as well as professional, public, and private organizations and institutions in the community.

  • Goal 10: To encourage personal and professional growth by providing staff development opportunities for all Library employees.

    *The term "community" refers to the faculty, staff, and students of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside as well as the people, agencies, institutions and businesses of the surrounding area.
