Applied Music
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Music Department offers all music majors and minors the opportunity to study their primary instrument each semester. Applied music is taught by highly qualified teaching performers, including full-time faculty and adjunct instructors from the greater Chicago-Milwaukee area.
Applied music courses are available in bassoon, cello, classical guitar, clarinet, double bass, flute, harpsichord, horn, oboe, organ, percussion, piano, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, tuba, violin, viola and voice.
Music majors register for two credits in applied study each semester, which translates to one 1-hour lesson per week. UW-Parkside students do not have to pay an extra fee for applied lessons, and many instruments are available for rental. Depending upon the degree option, music majors are required to take six – eight semesters of applied lessons, though most choose to continue study throughout their college career.
In addition to applied music opportunities for music majors, there are also opportunities for majors wishing to study a secondary instrument and for non-music majors. All students registering in applied music must be concurrently enrolled in one or more core music courses required for the music major and must participate in one ensemble appropriate to the student’s instrument.
