Academic Achievers Program (AAP) focuses on academic skill building. College students, faculty/staff and interested community adults provide mentoring and tutoring assistance to participating middle and high school students. Emphasis is on increasing math, science, English, reading comprehension, critical thinking skills and homework completion. Specific instruction includes grammar and punctuation, essay writing, vocabulary building, library awareness, public speaking, and all areas of math and science. Strategies for effective studying, overcoming math anxiety and test-taking techniques are taught. Students use Websites, educational software and TV programs designed to raise their academic skill level. During the school year, weekly sessions are held after school and on weekends. The student will show an increase in academic use of libraries; understanding and applying elements of various science fields; and interest in joining study groups and book clubs.
