Martel Pipkins, his son Jadrein Hyler, and his Grandfather Charles Hyler Sr.

NEWS: Martel Pipkins graduated in 2008 with a BA in Sociology at the University of Wisconsin Parkside, finished his MA at the University of Minnesota-Mankato in 2010, is now at Southern Illinois University pursuing his Ph.D in sociology.

Martel Pipkins writes: "I found myself playing soccer on an eight story building in Hua Hin, Thailand. Days before that, I roamed Pham Ngu Lao Street in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh) ignorantly chatting with sex workers about why they chose that profession. And somewhere in between I watered plants and washed dishes at a temple in Hong Kong. It was then I knew Parkside had indeed given me something I would probably have never gotten otherwise. Through scholarship I was pushed to the limit as I followed professor Seif DaNa's every class and outside presentations. He emptied my stomach making me hungry for more and more knowledge. Noticing my envy, he approached me explained his sufficient number of years ahead of me and with time my starvation would fade. Dr. Mary Kay Schleiter equipped me with a new utensil to feed myself, that utensil was research. Guiding me through my first attempts at research, her training helped when preparing my thesis. Dr. Khoury helped me put it into action with real life interviewing walking door-to-door on the streets of Racine. Both Dr. Fay Akindes and Dr. Kate Gillogly took me to a new place. Kate helped my writing go from average to beyond, while Fay motivated me with her ideas, insights and suggestions. Through it all, what I learnt and got the most of is a global conscious, motivation to act, dedication to the many causes from Palestine to Gay rights, writing, research, and most of all compassion."
