H1N1 Update
UW Parkside is currently experiencing an increase in the number of individuals with influenza like illness. If you have signs and symptoms of influenza please follow the recommendations below.
UW-Parkside has an emergency plan in place to address wide-ranging campus
issues and health concerns.
We have extended these preparedness efforts in
order to respond to the H1N1 pandemic. Our campus receives regular updates
and input from the Kenosha Public Health Department, the State of Wisconsin
Public Health Department and the Center for Disease Control.
Symptoms of H1N1 Flu:
- Cough
- Fever (100.0 degrees or above)
- Sore throat
- Malaise, body aches, fatigue
- Quick onset of symptoms
- Headache
- Chills
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Some may experience diarrhea and/or vomiting
Public Health Precautions:
It is important for all faculty, staff and students to take the following flu/respiratory disease precautions:
S neeze or cough into your sleeve, if you use a tissue throw it away immediately and...
W ash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer
I ncrease the distance between you and others who are ill
N o sharing of food or drinks
E ncourage everyone to practice healthy habits
Treatment and Response:
The majority of individuals who contract this virus will not need to seek treatment from a health care provider. Faculty, staff and students who are who are ill with flu should remain at home (or in their room) for 24 hours after they are fever-free without the use of fever reducing medication. A lingering cough may occur. If you have been in contact with someone who has the flu, onset of the virus can take up to three days. If you experience any flu symptoms within this time period, please stay home to limit the spread of the virus.
When to Seek Emergency Care
Seek emergency care immediately if you experience any of the following...
- difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- chest pain
- severe or persistent vomiting and unable to keep liquids down
- signs of dehydration such as dizziness when standing, absence of urination
- seizures (for example, uncontrolled convulsions)
- confusion of decreased responsiveness
- flu like symptoms that improve but then come back with worsening fever or cough
