Rights & Responsibilities of the Student/Client

New Rules and Regulations

In addition to the long-standing rights and responsibilities listed below, on April 14, 2003 new rules and regulations were enacted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Student/Client Rights

Believing the client to be an integral member of the health and counseling team, the staff of the SHCC wants their clients to know their Rights and Responsibilities. These rights and responsibilities are designed to help assure safe and effective delivery of counseling and health care in this facility.

You have the right:

  1. To be treated with consideration, dignity and respect without regard to your race, creed, color, national origin, gender, disability, or lifestyle preferences.
  2. To know names and professional status of those providing care.
  3. To have privacy concerning your health or counseling program.
  4. To have confidentiality of information in the medical/counseling records and to have access to the information it contains in a reasonable amount of time.
  5. To expect safe surroundings, free from all forms of abuse for harassment.
  6. To know the beneficial effect, side effects, and problem of all forms of treatment.
  7. To participate in choosing a form of treatment.
  8. To receive preventive education and counseling related to the prescribed treatment.
  9. To consent to or refuse any care or treatment.
  10. To select and/or change my counselor/health care provider.
  11. To be informed about services and related costs.
  12. To receive appropriate referrals to other providers and services.

The student has the right and obligation to know what health/counseling services rules, regulations, and policies apply to his/her conduct as a student/client.

Student/Client Responsibilities

You have the responsibility:

  1. To treat the Health and Counseling Center staff with respect, dignity, and consideration.
  2. To be honest and direct about anything related to your care.
  3. To seek medical attention promptly.
  4. To give accurate information about your own physical and mental health history.
  5. To ask questions about anything you do not understand.
  6. To report any significant changes in symptoms or failure to improve.
  7. To keep all appointments or cancel in a timely manner.
  8. To know the names, and purposes and effects of medications prescribed.
  9. To pay promptly any bills that you have incurred related to your care.
