First Year Experience Peer Mentor (Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA)
The First Year Experience (FYE) peer mentor program aims to improve and enhance student success in the first year and beyond. Peer Mentors will give a “student’s point of view” of college life, what works and what doesn’t, and act as facilitators guiding students to appropriate campus resources. The Peer Mentors will be linked with a specific course and have mentees who are enrolled in the specific course.
Responsibilities
- Make contact with the students (mentee) at least once a week (electronically or personally).
- Meet monthly with coordinator of program.
- Keep journals/logs tracking self and student interaction and attendance.
- Follow up with mentees who are absent from class.
- Attend one class session GNED 101 a week.
- Meet with the faculty instructor weekly.
- Attend monthly training sessions.
- Schedule one activity outside of class.
- Help first year student navigate the second semester of college by introducing transitional topics.
Compensation: $500 stipend per semester
OMSA Peer Advisor
Peer Advisors in the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs serve as advocates for first year students by providing assistance with academic, social, and personal concerns. The Peer Advisors are not counselors, but know of resources that are available on the UW-Parkside campus.
Responsibilities
- Attend all monthly meetings.
- Coordinate one to two cultural academic programs a year.
- Be knowledgeable and informative on offices and resources available at UW-Parkside.
- Work with OMSA staff to prepare events and information for students.
- Mentor first year students.
- Work with confidential information.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Compensation: $8.00/hour
Peer Health Educators are responsible for identifying student needs and developing programs to help support the UW-Parkside community in making responsible choices regarding the use of alcohol and other drugs, STD’s, healthy relationships, body image, stress relief, etc. This position includes programs on campus and occasionally in the local community.
Responsibilities
- Attend all training sessions and mandatory weekly team meetings.
- Work a minimum of 7 hours/week, with additional hours required during large programs.
- Role model a positive healthy life style.
- Respect differences that race, culture, class, sexual orientation, age, gender and personal abilities bring to the community.
- Work cooperatively with team members to plan and implement educational programming.
- Educate self and the university community on healthy living and positive choices.
Compensation: $795 stipend per semester
Ranger Hosts are responsible for assisting new students in their transition to university life.
Responsibilities
- Attend all training programs.
- Attend all orientation programs.
- Lead small group discussions and facilitate group interaction on campus issues.
- Assist with registration at New Student Orientation.
- Be available to students and family members to answer questions, provide information and lend assistance.
- Set a positive example by adhering to the rules and regulations of the University.
- Present a positive image of UW-Parkside.
Compensation: $7.50/hour
Resident Advisors are responsible for approximately 50 students in a residence hall living unit. Resident Advisors assist and advise students with academic, social and personal concerns. More importantly, Resident Advisors plan social and educational activities to assist residents in developing a community which fosters academic and social success.
Responsibilities
- Attend all training sessions and weekly team meetings.
- Assess resident’s needs and provide programs to meet those needs.
- Develop and maintain a positive community where the individual rights of all students are upheld and academic success is encouraged.
- Complete administrative duties as assigned.
Compensation: Equivalent to single room and meal plan for the academic year plus a stipend at the end of each academic semester
