Summer Bridge is an academic enrichment program for incoming first-year students at UW-Parkside. The program is designed to enhance your reading, critical thinking, and study skills to prepare you for a successful first-year of college.
Courses in the Summer Bridge are linked with integrating assignments, an integrating theme, extended instructor time with students, peer tutor assistance, peer educators, service learning, cultural/educational activities, and academic advising.
Summer Bridge courses take place over a four-week session from Monday, July, 16 to Thursday, August 9, 2012. ACT test scores determine placement into the composition and reading courses that are offered during Summer Bridge.

College Reading & Learning Strategies –
(The first part of the course is completed in Summer - the second part is completed in Fall. Class credit is awarded in Fall semester.)*
Builds a foundation for efficient college reading. Develops reading strategies that generalize to other university classes. Enhances students’ concentration, comprehension, and retention through discussion and practice. Includes essential academic learning and study skills such as time management, enhancing memory, effective listening, note taking, test taking, and academic responsibility.
Composition Preparation-
(The first part of the course is completed in Summer - the second part is completed in Fall. Class credit is awarded in Fall semester.)*
Writing workshop, includes peer review and teacher
feedback on essay and term paper assignments. Process of
writing approach: brainstorming, free writing, rough draft,
revision, and editing. Grammar review in context.
*Credit does not count toward graduation. Grade does count in overall GPA.
College Success/Life Skills Seminars-
This seminar series focuses on the development of the
whole person (a holistic approach) and the relationship
between the individual and the community in the context
building a foundation for success in college as well as
development of lifelong learning skills. Seminars will
include collaborative learning experiences covering such
topics as: orientation to the university and a liberal arts
education, assessment of individual strengths and areas for
growth, Financial literacy and Financial aid, career
exploration, graduate school, diversity, health and wellness,
and community engagement.
