Parkside Theatre's FreshINK staged reading series offers three performances of the critically acclaimed play "Nickel and Dimed." Presented in UW-Parkside's remodeled Student Center Cinema, this provocative working class drama adapted by Joan Holden from the bestselling book by Barbara Ehrenreich, begins at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 30, 31, and Feb. 1, 2009.

Based on the book "Nickel and Dimed, On (Not) Getting by in America," the play focuses on those who work for minimum wage. With uncompromising clarity, we meet the people who have dead end jobs and share the financially strained life millions of working Americans now lead.

"This play could not be more timely," stated director Virginia Hartley. "With so many Americans unemployed or under-employed, this play takes on increased significance. 'Nickel and Dimed' brings us face-to-face with the harsh daily realities of those we so often take for granted, if we think about them at all."

Hartley said the cast includes some of Parkside Theatre's brightest new faces. "Nickel and Dimed" is voiced by Eva Balistrieri, Sarah Mergener, and Taylor Glowac who played prominent roles in Parkside Theatre's recent production of "The Winter's Tale;" Felicia Dominguez who starred in "The Foreigner," along with Alecia Annachino, Meggie Grievell, and Andrew Beine who were featured in "The Story of Opal." Behind the scenes, Niki Ziesemer serves as stage manager.

During a staged reading, actors may refer to their scripts. The use of props is kept to a minimum and there are no special costumes. Admission is free. Donations to the UW-Parkside S.T.A.G.E. Club are accepted and benefit Theatre Arts students.
