Now showing: AIDS Memorial Quilt
The much-anticipated exhibition of the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt begins today Monday, Oct. 22, at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Ten massive panels of this patchwork of sorrow and human hope are being shown in the Fine Arts Gallery of the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities but only through Nov. 4.
Part of the exhibition includes personal tributes by emeritus faculty to family members who died of AIDS. Retired Theatre Arts Professor Judith Tucker Snider created a quilt honoring her brother John Tucker. Judy Warren, wife of retired Theatre Arts Professor Skelley Warren, also created a panel for her brother Tommy Goodman.
Along with the quilt, UW-Parkside presents a series of exhibition-related programs throughout the quilt's time on campus.
"Our goal is to offer an array of educational and cultural programs, both on-campus and in the community, exploring the profound impact of AIDS on a local, national, and global scale," said UW-Parkside Gallery Director Patricia Briggs. "The quilt is the focal point and catalyst for programs that address AIDS' profound impact on education, healthcare, bioethics, political, religious, and our society."
These events are highlighted by four performances of the original play "Voices from the Quilt" and three performances of selections from the "AIDS Quilt Songbook." The complete events calendar is shown here with more information available on the university web site. The events are:
