This weekend (& beyond) @ UW-Parkside

"Dancing at Lughnasa" Benefit shows Friday & Saturday

Parkside Theatre presents special performances of the bittersweet play "Dancing at Lughnasa" Friday and Saturday. The performances are to raise money to send the play's 25-member cast and crew to the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Region III Festival in Saginaw, Michigan. Both shows start at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre. A reception featuring light refreshments is held prior to Saturday's performance in Studio A. Both venues are in the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities.

Loosely based on the hard scrabble lives of playwright Brian Friel's mother and aunts, "Dancing at Lughnasa" is a tale of remembrance seen through the eyes of narrator Michael Evans who, at the time of the play, is seven years old. The story takes place during the last days of summer when love briefly seems possible for three of the five Mundy sisters.

Noteworthy are the performances of Brittany Boecheas Maggie Mundy, Laura Chartrand as Agnes Mundy, and Michael Dalberg as Father Jack. These student actors were nominated in the Irene Ryan Acting Competition. The cast features Kenjamin Lafayette as Michael Evans, Shanna Theiste as Kate Mundy, Katlin Kobernick as Rose Mundy, Rachel Sandlin as Christina Mundy, and Ethan Hall as Gerry Evans.

Tickets are $17 for adults, $13 for seniors and UW-Parkside faculty and staff, and $8 for students. Donations toward the Kennedy Center travel fund are gratefully accepted. Order online at www.uwparksidetickets.com or by calling 262-595-2564.

Reilly addresses Winter Commencement Sunday

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside honors the Class of 2012 during Winter Commencement Sunday, Dec. 16, starting at 1 p.m. Held in the De Simone Gymnasium of the Sports & Activity Center, the 329 students eligible to graduate and their guests will hear a keynote address by University of Wisconsin System President Dr. Kevin P. Reilly. President Reilly is the driving force behind "Knowledge Powers Wisconsin," a comprehensive plan to position the UW System as Wisconsin's premier developer of talent and as a major generator of the jobs to employ that talent.

A dedicated educator and researcher, Dr. Kinzelman has conducted cutting-edge research to develop methods to speed up water quality monitoring.
