A Garden in a Pocket
The Garden of Sue K.
Don’t be fooled, this garden may be diminutive, but you don’t have to be a Lilliputian to enjoy it!
UW-Parkside alumna and accountant, Sue has a flair for balancing accounts—but she definitely has demonstrated equal talent in the artful balance she has brought to her home landscape. Sue and her husband Gary have managed to coax quite a performance out of each flower, tree and shrub that surrounds their abode.
Upon approach, the first thing you will be drawn to is the variegated copper beech that looks like it has just been waiting for you to arrive to admire it. Surrounding this proud sentinel are under-plantings of shrubs and flowers in complementary texture, form and color. The rhythm they create almost picks you up and floats you along. No spot is overlooked, no corner untended.
Moving into the family’s main living area, you are sure to be pleasantly amazed by the number of landscape elements that blend so calmly in this postage stamp back yard. Almost like a dream, a tiny, but sturdy, bridge spans a running stream edged in delicate plantings. But before you leave you are treated to a spectacular side yard perennial bed that is offered like a friendly handshake between homeowners.
Are you looking for a garden that is quaint and friendly—a place that will offer you the encouragement you need to pursue your own gardening dreams? Well, then you’ve got to see this garden!
