Sanctuary in the City

Sanctuary in the City

The Garden of Debbie W.

Sanctuary seems to be the only apt description for a city garden brimming with bird, bee and flower.  If you can tear yourself away from all there is to absorb in the breath-taking front yard, the scent of a towering shrub rose reaches out with crazy fragrance to lure you toward the silent but stunning display of iris, delphinium, daisy, daylily, peony, lavender, ligularia, monarda, and coreopsis in this so-called “backyard.”  You’ll know you are at the home of a true gardener; someone who keeps one ear to the earth, one eye to the sky, and all of her heart to creatures and flora that inhabit her world.  Over many a year, Deb has nurtured this little vivarium to its utmost perfection, all the while raising her family, including UWP alumna, Laura, who is now a 3rd grade teacher in Kenosha.

But more than that, this oasis in the city is a registered wildlife sanctuary, so designated by the National Wildlife Federation. This garden does it all: it’s a life-source for the winged and tailed, yet it offers a smorgasbord of botanical desserts for even the most garden-savvy. Are you looking for respite among the darling, the daring, the do-good?  Well, then you’ve got to see this garden!
