Celebrating the Hallmarks of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside
Wednesday, November 4, 2009
Day two of Inauguration Week marked a celebration of academic excellence. The posters in the concourse were a reminder to all of the research and creative activities taking place at the university on a daily basis.
At noon in the Student Center, a panel of UW-Parkside faculty discussed the interconnectedness of academic excellence. Dirk Baldwin, associate dean of the School of Business and Technology, said he continually reminds students of the importance of knowledge. “It’s not just about attaining the knowledge,” he said, “it’s about what students do with the knowledge once it has been attained.” As an example, Baldwin said he advises business students who plan to work for Abbott Laboratories that the knowledge of chemistry gives them an advantage. Likewise, he said, a chemist who has knowledge of accounting is more valuable.
Faculty panel members were:
Dr. Fay Akindes, Communication
Dr. Jeffrey Alexander, History
Dr. Dirk Baldwin, Business
Dr. Robert Barber, Biological Sciences
Dr. Patricia Cleary, Geosciences
Dr. Cathleen Folker, Business
Dr. James Kinchen, Music
Dr. Jerry Greenfield, History, Interim Provost, moderator
