The University of Wisconsin-Parkside invites applications for the Instructional Designer position.

This position is under the broad policy guidance of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE) in its role as a lead unit to ensure successful delivery of non-traditional educational programs including distance education, flex, and blended modalities. General supervision for this position is provided by the Associate Vice Chancellor, Institutional Effectiveness. The person in this position works with OIE, the Center for Teaching and Learning, Campus Technology Services (CTS) and the Provost's Office to lead the development of programs, systems, and anticipate the educational needs of faculty and students in online, blended, and competency-based environments. This position provides leadership for the development, implementation, and assessment of faculty who are developing and delivering educational programs in non-­ traditional formats and for students participating in non-traditional programs offered at UW­ Parkside. This person coordinates the activities of a four person team that consists of: the Director, Center for Teaching and Learning, an instructional support specialist, the Learning Technology Center (LTC) Manager, and this position.

Qualifications

Required

  • Master's degree in an area related to education, instruction, instructional design, instructional technology, Learning/Educational Psychology.
  • One year of experience leading non-traditional program design, development and innovation.
  • Experience assessing non-traditional programs.
  • Experience developing professional development programs for faculty and staff professional development.
  • Experience with delivery of programs to serve non-traditional students.

 

Preferred
  • Ph.D. degree in instructional design, education, or related field
  • Prior experience developing instructional programs to serve non-traditional program-based students and leading the delivery of student support in an online environment.

  • Collegiate or K-12 teaching experience

  • Experience leading faculty in developing instructional programs for non- traditional programs.

  • Experience with blended, online, and competency-based educational delivery

  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Three years or more of progressively responsible experience leading non-traditional program development and delivery.

  • Experience with Desire2Learn.

  • Prior experience with developing systems to assess student learning outcomes in both face-to-face and online environments.

  • Prior success in supporting non-traditional students in an online setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. (50%) Lead faculty to create high quality learning opportunities and continuously improve non-traditional courses and program delivery including:
    1. Lead, educate, assess, and manage faculty and staff involved in defining appropriate instructional strategies for effective instructional technology and multimedia use in teaching and learning
    2. Act as the main campus expert in the latest pedagogical and technological approaches for the delivery of blended, competency-based, and online course curricula/competencies. Demonstrate expertise and knowledge of future trends in the field of non-traditional program development and delivery
    3. Act as the main campus expert in the development, implementation, and assessment of teaching and learning strategies for non-traditional course and program delivery.
    4. Lead development of face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses; lead the process of revising and updating existing courses, adapting courses from one delivery method to another and developing new courses.
    5. Determine the appropriateness of various media, taking into account cost, educational goals and objectives, potential audience, learning environment conditions, and the sustainability and compatibility of the technology.
    6. Develop, implement, and distribute campus reporting related to non-traditional program delivery and provide campus expertise in financial management of non-traditional program development and delivery.
    7. Provide leadership and guidance for the faculty, staff, the Deans, and students within the four Colleges, the academic divisions, and for other curricular efforts on campus to assure the design and development of instructional applications are pedagogically sound. Lead and educate faculty and students in the selection and use of effective instructional development tools and activities.
    8. Lead initiatives related to non-traditional program delivery and trends in the field in collaboration with the Center for Teaching and Learning, Campus Technology Services staff, Academic Affairs staff, and the Library staff to sustain and develop faculty development initiatives throughout the campus.
    9. Design, apply and modify various instructional design models and components to develop high quality teaching and learning environments within D2L and other technology platforms for non-traditional program delivery.
    10. Lead campus initiatives to develop and deliver training, professional development programs and resources designed for new, full-time, and adjunct faculty, students, and staff, e.g., seminars, forums, round-tables, synchronous and asynchronous modules, boot camps etc.
    11. Assess faculty, student, and staff needs for professional development and training. Lead initiatives to provide training programs throughout campus.
    12. Lead the further development of Quality Matters training and oversee course checks.
    13. Facilitate the implementation of instructional innovations.
    14. Provide one-on-one consulting with instructional staff, faculty, and administrators regarding their instructional technology needs.
  2. (30%) Design, develop, and implement programs to support students taking online courses through the University's learning management system, Desire2Learn (D2L) and alternative technology portals for non-traditional program delivery, including:
    1. Developing synchronous and asynchronous training for students taking courses online.
    2. Managing assistance via telephone, online, and face-to-face to assist students with technical issues in the online classroom.
    3. Providing one-on-one consulting and assistance to students regarding their instructional technology needs.
  3. (10%) Overseeing institutional and program assessment and improvement for online, blended, and flex learning including:
    1. Performing online and institutional research to aggregate data into final reports to be used in the ongoing accreditation, compliance, and initiative maintenance and/or expansion.
    2. Analyzing, designing, and developing instructional materials for existing and new initiatives in accordance with standards and specifications required for online pedagogical best practices.
    3. Overseeing multiple projects and timelines across the University and ensuring they are on-schedule for successful completion.
    4. Producing technical written projects that are clear, concise, appropriately detailed, and understandable by diverse audiences of faculty and staff.
    5. Coordinating training and ongoing communication (via social media, newsletter, blog, listserv) of online faculty and guide them through e-learning orientation and ongoing professional development to ensure pedagogical best practices and student success.
    6. Coordinating the scheduling of course and program revisions to ensure consistent quality and continually updated curriculum.
    7. Coordinating assessment of student learning outcomes for non-traditional programs and work with faculty to improve outcome measures and student success.
  4. (5%) Emerging Technology.
    1. Monitor new teaching and learning technology to determine appropriate use.
    2. Participate in piloting technologies, collect feedback, evaluate and lead innovation for non-traditional program delivery.
    3. Lead faculty and staff with defining effective technology use in teaching and learning.
  5. (5%) Other
    1. Participate in organizational and department activities and projects
