“Communi-bees” vie for Spelling Bee title April 22

On Thursday, March 26, a group of adult literacy students and several literacy tutors from the Kenosha Literacy Council visited the UW-Parkside campus. They were led on a tour by Campus Ambassador and Communication major Camilla Simon. The students admired the campus, and a few expressed interest in attending UW-Parkside in the future.

On a related note, UW-Parkside will be supporting the Kenosha Literacy Council by sending a team to its 10th Annual Community Spelling Bee. This event will take place on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Gateway Technical College's Madrigrano Auditorium.  The Spelling Bee is the Literacy Council's biggest fundraiser with 100% of the proceeds supporting its English literacy programs.

The Bee is a spectator sport with ten to twelve teams of adults competing against each other in elimination rounds until the champion spelling team is left.  Parkside's team, the "Communi-bees," includes Fay Akindes, Joe Lambin, Megan Mullen, Jonathan Shailor, and Adrienne Viramontes. Members of the campus community are encouraged to attend this fun event and support the team.

Tickets are only $20 and provide admission to the Bee where attendees not only enjoy keen competition, but also a great selection of appetizers and small sweets, Starbucks coffee, and a cash bar.  There will also be a raffle and wonderful Silent Auction gift baskets.   Tickets may be purchased at the Kenosha Literacy Council, 2419 ? 63rd Street, Kenosha, or through Megan Mullen.

Established in 1965 as a non-profit agency, the Kenosha Literacy Council trains volunteer tutors to teach the growing number of adults in Kenosha who want to learn to read, write and speak English.  During the last two years, the number of adult learners served by the Literacy Council has increased by 33%.  100% of the learners improved their English communication skills.  Many Parkside faculty and students volunteer their time as tutors.  According to Associate Professor Megan  Mullen, "tutoring is a wonderful way to strengthen our community by helping all adults become literate."
