Young women & ‘STEM’ careers conference Nov. 13
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Professional and Continuing Education Program hosts the 2009 Women in Technology Conference Friday, Nov. 13, on the campus at 900 Wood Rd., Kenosha. The program allows young women in middle school to explore opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers and encourages college readiness.
"Each year the university brings seventh grade girls to campus to interact with women employed in technology-related careers and to allow them to experience technology labs with the university's faculty and staff," said Shannon McGuire, UW-Parkside's Associate Director of Educational Outreach. "We are planning presentations on biotechnology, computer science, engineering, graphic arts, and software development."
McGuire said the conference is limited to 50 participants which caps enrollment from each school at four students. A separate program for teachers and other adults is also held Nov. 13. This program "mirrors" the girls' lab experiences and discusses ways to support them in their academic success.
The 2009 Women in Technology Conference is held from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost for each student and adult participant is $15, which covers the program, breakfast, and lunch.
Early registration is highly encouraged. School registration forms, a parent letter and a participant permission slip can be found by visiting www.uwp.edu keyword: K12 education. For more information, call Felicia Stallworth at 262-595-2312 or access stallwor@uwp.edu by email.
