Lecture examines family history & race Oct. 13
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside welcomes former faculty member and multicultural education expert Christine Sleeter to campus for a morning lecture Tuesday, Oct. 13. Dr. Sleeter presents the program "Critical Family History, Race, and Historical Memory" beginning at 10:30 a.m.
A professor emerita at California State University-Monterey Bay's College of Professional Studies, Dr. Sleeter is an internationally known scholar specializing in anti-racist multicultural education with a focus on "white privilege."
"My grandfather worked very hard and I can't say that he didn't," Dr. Sleeter said in explaining white privilege. "But I can't just individualize his success. I have to look at it in the historical context of who had access to what. This allows me to say that yes, my grandfather worked hard, but in a situation in which the doors were closed to people who may have worked equally hard but who were not white."
The author of more than 100 articles in edited books and journals, Dr. Sleeter is a 2009 recipient of the Social Justice in Education Award from the American Education Research Association. She received UW-Parkside's Excellence in Research and Creative Activity Award in 1993 before leaving to become a founding faculty member at Cal State-Monterey Bay.
"Critical Family History, Race, and Historical Memory" with Dr. Christine Sleeter is held in the UW-Parkside Student Center Ballroom. Admission is free. The program is sponsored by the UW-Parkside Teacher Education Dept. and Center for Ethnic Studies, with support from the College of Arts & Sciences, Lecture & Fine Arts Committee, Office of Equity & Diversity, Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, Office of the Provost, and the Teaching and Learning Center.
