UW-Parkside Community Band, Wind Ensemble to play
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Wind Ensemble and Community Band present an evening of British band classics, music from Pulitzer Prize winning composers, and more Thursday, Oct. 22. Conducted by UW-Parkside Music Professor Mark Eichner who is starting his 27th year of leading the Wind Ensemble, the concert is held in the Student Center Ballroom.
Continuing their year-long tribute to British band classics, the Wind Ensemble performs "Rhosymedre" by Ralph Vaughan Williams and the Community Band presents Gustav Holst's "Moorside Suite," a piece commissioned in 1927 by the BBC and the Britain's National Brass Band Festival Committee.
The Wind Ensemble also features music by Pulitzer composers Norman Dello Joio and Samuel Barber.
"In Dello Joio's 'From Every Horizon,' the composer paints a poetic picture of life in New York City: the calm of the early morning, the morning commute, the bustling vibe of the city, and the tired out-of-towner," Eichner said. "Barber's 'First Essay' is a transcription of the orchestra music premiered by Arturo Toscanini during the same concert in which the legendary 'Adagio for Strings' premiered in 1938."
"Morning Star" by Montana composer David Maslanka and Louis Ganne's "Father of Victory" complete the Wind Ensemble program, Eichner added.
The Community Band then performs the overture of "Le Corsaire" by Hector Berlioz and the "Old London Suite" by Englishman Geoffrey Bush. The Community Band and Wind Ensemble join forces for a grand finale "Poetry and Power" by Alfred Reed.
This evening of exceptional music begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students, seniors, and UW-Parkside faculty and staff.
