Symphony, Community Orchestra play Oct. 24
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Music Dept. proudly presents the Camerata string ensemble and its Symphony and Community Orchestra in concert Saturday, Oct. 24. Led by conductor Alvaro Garcia, this evening of music by Edvard Grieg, Beethoven, and others begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.
The UW-Parkside Camerata, a small string-based ensemble, begins the program with the Concerto Grosso Opus 6, No. 5,and Concerto Grosso Opus 6, No. 4 by Arcangelo Corelli. Although Corelli did not invent the Concerto Grosso concept, he popularized it, making possible the future successes in the form by Vivaldi, Handel, and Bach. Despite the fact that he wouldn't allow the music to be published during his lifetime, Corelli's Opus 6 became one of the most famous pieces of music during the Baroque period.
The first half of the evening's program features the UW-Parkside Symphony and Community Orchestra performing Francois Couperin's overture and allegro from "La Sultane Suite." Following a brief intermission, the symphony and orchestra perform Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major, Opus 60. The program concludes with Edvard Grieg's stirring "Norwegian Dances," Opus 35.
Admission for this evening of great music is $6 for adults and $4 for seniors, students, and UW-Parkside faculty and staff.
