Art Dept. goes modern during Chicago field trip
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Art Department invites area residents to experience the Art Institute of Chicago's Modern Wing during a field trip Thursday, Nov. 5. Serving as the new home for the Institute's collection of 20th and 21st Century art, this full-day excursion to the Modern Wing costs just $25 which includes motor coach transportation and museum admission.
An extension of Chicago's Millennium Park, the Modern Wing houses the Institute's world-renowned collections of modern European painting and sculpture, contemporary art, architecture and design, and photography. The building, designed by award-winning architect Renzo Piano, is itself a work of art.
The Modern Wing's first floor houses the Institute's permanent collection of photography with works by conceptual artist Marcel Broodthaers, fashion photographer Irving Penn, and invited artists Gaylen Gerber and Liz Deschene among others. Galleries on the museum's second floor feature the Architecture and Design Collection with objects by Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier. Examples of industrial design by Matali Crasset, graphic design by Bruce Mau, and contemporary works of design, including chairs, stools, lighting, and textiles are shown in these galleries.
The Modern Wing's second floor also houses the Institute's Contemporary collection. Rivaling the depth and quality of New York's Museum of Modern Art and the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, the Contemporary collection showcases artists such as Andy Warhol, Mel Bochner, Robert Gober, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Charles Ray, Christopher Wool, and others, with many works being presented for the first time.
The third floor exhibits Modern European art. Crowned by Piano's ingenious "flying carpet" steel roof, this floor is graced by Henri Matisse's "Bathers by a River," an elegant grouping of works by Pablo Picasso, sculptures by Constantin Brancusi, and surrealist objects by Man Ray, Claude Cahun, Rene Magritte, and Salvador Dali.
UW-Parkside's field trip to Art Institute of Chicago's Modern Wing is open to the public. The bus leaves the Communication Arts parking lot on Nov. 5 at approximately 9:15 a.m. and returns at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Communication Arts box office daily from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cash, check, or credit cards are accepted.
