Student workshops tackle chemistry, electricity

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Professional and Continuing Education Program hosts a pair of workshops on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. Held in partnership with Space Education Initiatives and geared toward students in fourth through eighth grades, the university presents "Kitchen Chemistry" Saturday, Nov. 7, and "Electricity" Saturday, Dec. 12 on the campus at 900 Wood Rd. Kenosha. Each starts at 9 a.m. and ends at noon.

"Both programs provide an opportunity for students to use active learning skills," said UW-Parkside Associate Director of Educational Outreach Shannon McGuire. "By combining their physical efforts and their thought processes, students make the connection between the science they are learning in class and real-world applications. And they may see a path leading from their coursework, to their future academic plans, and on to potential careers."

The Nov. 7 kitchen chemistry program examines how chemistry governs the way materials are put together and how they act--and react--under various conditions. This program features several hands on-chemistry experiments that can be performed using items found in just about any kitchen.

The Dec. 12 workshop introduces students to electricity and magnetism through demonstrations and hand-on activities, McGuire said. Participants will build a small electric motor, an electromagnet, a telegraph, and more. For more information, visit www.uwp.edu keyword: PCE and click on the Community Education Events link.

The cost of each workshop is $30 which includes instruction and materials. To register, call Felicia Stallworth at 262-595-2312 or access stallwor@uwp.edu by email.
