(A letter to) Chancellor Deborah L. Ford
Chancellor Deborah L. Ford
University of Wisconsin-Parkside
Thank you for inviting me to address your group at the Bilingual Open House at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside last Saturday. As you can imagine, as President and founder of Latino Speakers Bureau and in my community advocacy, I have an opportunity to partner with many campuses across the nation and around the world to share messages of motivation and inspiration from our platform of 55 speakers.
Education is a passion of our team and it was energizing to see how committed you all are in your work and the amazing resources your campus offers diversity students as they prepare for success. I am glad we have a little time to talk this weekend and I hope my own story and conversations with parents and students attending the event helped motivate them and see the possibilities your university offers. I find that because I have lived both in the United States and Mexico, I can easily connect to Hispanic communities as they identify my journey as their own.
Your staff, faculty, and volunteers were wonderful in offering information and walking families through what they need to know about admissions. I know how unfamiliar and challenging the whole process can be and celebrate that you have Mirella Rivera and other Hispanic professionals on your team. As a diversity consultant, I see a lot of organizations--including those at the pinnacle of corporate America--struggle when they lack language proficient and culturally savvy staff that can help individuals access information. Language and cultural barriers pose hurdles for universities, hospitals, and in fact any service needing to educate users on how things work. Your group did a fine job with your Bilingual Open House on Saturday and I applaud what you are doing at UWP. Your team is clearly motivated and that is a tribute to your leadership.
I am looking forward to hearing of your success and future projects.
Have a wonderful day and thanks again!
