App of the Day: Introduction

Ranger Today has a new feature and we'd like you to participate. The feature is called "App of the Day" and it will alternate with the "Colors of the Day" to highlight your favorite and most useful/entertaining/informative cell phone applications.
Apps have changed the way many of us use cell phones and computers. And there are thousands of apps covering just about every interest. We'd like to know your favorites.
We'll get this started. Today's App of the Day is Shazam. In addition to being what Captain Marvel (and Gomer Pyle) used to say, Shazam is a mobile phone-based music identification service. Using your phone's built-in mic, Shazam gathers a brief sample of music being played. An "acoustic fingerprint" is created based on the sample, and is compared against a central database for a match. If a match is found, information such as the artist, song title, and album are relayed back to the user. And it works! Give it a try.
We know you have favorite apps so share them with us. Use the "Tell Us What's Happening" link to send us your suggestions.
Also, watch for our new Faculty Features section. This will be an ongoing section that highlights the expertise of UW-Parkside faculty members. Like who? Like Patrick McGuire on obscure English words and phrases, Jay McRoy on movies you probably haven't seen, and...you! If you have an idea for an ongoing faculty feature, tell us about it. Again, use the "What's Happening" form to tell us your proposed feature.
