Let creativity reign: Get your umbrella now

If you're an artist (and even if you're not) it's time to let your imagination and creativity rain down during the University of Wisconsin-Parkside's Celebration for the Year of the Arts and Humanities! Shower the beautiful new Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities (a.k.a. "The Rita") with your own inspired umbrella creation. But you need to get your "canvas" (your umbrella) now.

Individual artists and groups of artists (such as classes) can pick up a white umbrellas at one of four locations through Saturday, March 24. Get yours at

  • Black Eyed Press, 312 Sixth Street, Racine
  • Carolyn's Coffee Connection, 1351 52nd Street, Kenosha
  • Wustum Museum, 2519 Northwestern Ave., Racine or
  • UW-Parkside Box Office, 900 Wood Rd., Kenosha

Artists are asked to use their own art materials--everything from paint and fabric to glitter, markers, whatever!--and their imaginations to design and decorate one-a-kind creations. Completed umbrellas must be returned to original pick up site no later than Friday, April 13.

They will then be prominently displayed at The Rita Community Celebration Saturday, April 28 from 2 to 5 p.m. The umbrella exhibit will be on display throughout "The Rita" from April 20 to May 15. After the exhibition closes, umbrella artists can keep their creations or donate them for an auction to help raise funds for upcoming community arts events to be held at The Rita.

A total of 100 umbrellas were made available for this community-art project when the event was announced March 1. Artists are asked to review project guidelines and sign an artist's agreement to return the umbrella art for the exhibit.

For more details about the umbrella project, call "The Rita" box office today at 262-595-2564.
