The Year of the Arts and Humanities continues at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside with the Community and Alumni Celebration Saturday, April 28. Held in the new Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities from 2-5 p.m., the event showcases local arts and humanities organizations to area residents and welcomes UW-Parkside alumni back to campus.

Event Brings Region Together

"The Community and Alumni Celebration is intended to bring the region together for an afternoon of family-oriented cultural experiences and hands-on creative activities," said UW-Parkside Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Dean Yohnk. "More than a dozen area arts and humanities groups will hold interactive events, performances, and demonstrations to show the wide array of cultural activities available in our region and put them all together in one place. Plus, there are a number of events exclusively by and for our alumni."

Community and Alumni Celebration events include theater, fine arts, music, and literature. The Lakeshore Players' Children's Series offers songs from "Captain Louie Jr.," and Disney's "Beauty and The Beast" while the Racine Theatre Guild hosts a Kids Acting Workshop. Visit the Racine Arts Council's Musical Petting Zoo or enjoy concerts by the Lakeshore Youth Philharmonic, the UW-Parkside Community Orchestra, and Kathleen Picken's group The Recorders of Merriwood. UW-Parkside Theatre Arts alumni stage the play "Antigone" during the celebration.

Visitors can view the Veterans Book Project and the best new art by UW-Parkside students. Or they can get a taste of the artistically unusual during the Black Eyed Press Edible Book Contest and the Racine Art Museum's (RAM) International Peeps Competition. The RAM on the Road mobile art studio will be on campus for hands-on family art activities. And patrons can enjoy Voices and Verses' "Patterns of Light" a multimedia work composed for the new Frances Bedford Concert Hall.

UW-Parkside alumni are encouraged to explore The Rita and to connect with friends and faculty while on campus. An alumni reception with special events for graduates is planned. Call the Office of Alumni Relations at 262-595-2233 for details.

The Community and Alumni Celebration features umbrella art created for the "Shower Us with Creativity" exhibition. One hundred umbrellas are currently being designed and decorated by area artists and groups for this unique exhibition. The art umbrellas will be shown in The Rita during the April 28 event and throughout May.

More information on the day's events is available on the UW-Parkside web site at www.uwp.edu or by calling the university's Fine Arts Office at 262-595-2457.

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside has designed 2012 as The Year of the Arts and Humanities. During this calendar year, more than 300 events including art exhibitions, concerts, theatre productions, films, special lectures, celebrations, and other events will be held on the campus located at 900 Wood Rd. in Kenosha.
