The University of Wisconsin-Parkside hosts a weeklong celebration to honor United States armed forces personnel during Student Military Appreciation Week. Events beginning Monday, April 9, and continue through Friday, April 13, at the campus located at 900 Wood Rd. in Kenosha.

Sponsored by Student Activities, Student Military Appreciation Week begins with an opening flag ceremony Monday at noon in Main Place where free food is served. At 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., the movie "Top Gun" is shown in the Student Center Cinema on Military Movie Monday, while "Delta Force" is shown at 7 p.m.

Tuesday, April 10, Student Military Appreciation Week events continue with the Military Resource Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Student Center Bridge. Wednesday, April 11, at 5 p.m. it's "Dinner and Dialogue" with Vet George Michel in the Student Center Ballroom. A free dinner is provided. To attend, sign up in Student Activities.

"UW-Parkside has an opportunity to provide support to military students. It's really important that we appreciate what the troops do because it's a group of students that is sometimes overlooked," said Tony Kwiatkowski, director of student activities.

"We celebrate athletes, student organizations, and other student groups but our military students don't always get the attention they deserve. We need to address that and celebrate everything they do."

Other events include the ongoing Veterans Book Project exhibition in the UW-Parkside's Foundation Gallery, a military uniform display in the Student Center Art Gallery; the Military Appreciation Card everyone can sign in Main Place, and the Military Appreciation Wall for students to share kind thoughts and feelings about military service, located near room D128 of Molinaro Hall.

Sodexo provides complimentary items at Brickstone Grill and Eatery throughout the week.
