SBT reaches out through Educator Outreach program

By Katrina Neveri

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside School of Business and Technology (SBT) was talking higher education when it welcomed representatives from area high schools, and two-year institutions to campus.

The Wednesday, April 4, Educator Outreach program brought business and IT educators from Gateway Technical College, Milwaukee Area Technical College, the College of Lake County, Westosha High School, Union Grove High School, and St. Joseph to UW-Parkside's Alumni Room in the Student Center to discuss articulation agreements and other topics. The educators also met UW-Parkside faculty and students and toured the university's Ralph Jaeschke Solutions of Economic Growth (SEG) Center.

After welcomes from Dean Dr. Fred Ebeid and SBT Academic Advisor Trudy Biehn, the educators met UW-Parkside students Anna Garcia, Yuni Nfor, Tiffany Vorwald, and Longyun Zhou. They talked about the concentrations available in the Business Management major and their own successful involvement and personal growth through SEG Center projects. In another presentation, business students Chris McMahon and Trevor Severson's delivered their research titled "Improving Healthcare Delivery in the Department of Corrections." It grabbed the attention of the educators as it was also a project presented on March 7 to a group of Wisconsin legislators who are currently giving it statewide attention.

Biehn discussed career pathways and the current articulation agreement between UW-Parkside's Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management and MATC's Associate of Applied Sciences Degree in Business Management. The '2+2' program allows students who are currently enrolled or have graduated from MATC with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Business Management to continue their education at UW-Parkside. The acceptance of these credits allows MATC students to complete their bachelor's degree in Business Management in just two years.

The session also focused on articulation agreements between Kenosha Unified and Racine Unified school districts. The goal of the 'Program of Study Plan'  or 'Career Pathway' is to encourage local high schools with finance, accounting, business management, human resources, marketing and IT/computer science courses to promote secondary and post-secondary education to their students.

Joel Buschmann, assistant director of Admissions, also provided information on admissions criteria and Shannon McGuire, director of professional development, updated guests on educational opportunities made possible in the Teacher Preparation and Professional Development program. Following presentations and round table discussions with faculty from the School of Business and Technology, the educators toured the SEG Center and Computer Science labs. During the tour, UW-Parkside students made presentations on the real-life marketing and information technology projects they completed for local businesses and non-profit agencies through the Center.

The Educator Outreach event was supported by a Chancellor's Mini Grant  awarded to the School of Business and Technology, Admissions, and Teacher Preparation and Professional Development.
