UW-Parkside hosts “Bear Paw for a Cause”
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside hosts the fourth annual "Bear Paws for a Cause" Saturday, April 28. This 4K trail run/walk at the Wayne Dannehl National Cross Country Course in Kenosha raises scholarship money for the student athletes and students who are majoring in sport or fitness management.
This event is organized by students enrolled in an event management class at the university. The students learn to organize, promote, and run the event under the direction of visiting clinical professor Linda Draft.
Another feature of this event is the use of "age graded" scoring to determine the winner. This is a handicapping system that compares a runner's actual time to his or her "ideal time" based on age and gender. Last year's winners included a 48 year-old male and a 20 year-old female. This age grade scoring provides each participant the chance to win the race. The top three male and female finishers of the race will receive recognition and prizes.
In the past 3 years, this event has raised nearly $10,000 for scholarships and participation has increased each year. Previous years participants agree the event--whether walking or running, rain or shine--is "a beautiful walk through the fields and woods." In addition to the race, the class has also organized fun activities including a warm up session with a fitness management major from UW-Parkside and raffles.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the run/walk steps off at 10 a.m. Cost is $20 for adults 18 and older and $12 for students for those who register by April 22; after April 22, the cost is $25 dollars for adults and $17 for students. Children 11 years and under are free.
