Thursday: Tornado drill at UW-Parkside

April 16-20 is Tornado Awareness Week in Wisconsin. To maximize campus preparedness, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside is participating in a state-wide tornado drill Thursday, April 19, between 1 and 2 p.m.

During the drill, our various emergency communication systems will be tested including the Ranger Alert text messaging system. If you haven't signed up for Ranger Alert you can do so now.

Now, while you're reading this article, is a good time to determine where to seek shelter when a tornado warning has been issued. For the academic complex, go to the D2 level. For other campus buildings, shelter locations can be found at the UW-Parkside tornado warnings and alert policy.

Remember:

A tornado "watch" means severe conditions are possible;

A tornado "warning" means severe conditions are imminent and you should take shelter immediately. A Ranger Alert message is sent out for both.

When a tornado warning has been issued, county emergency management activates the outdoor sirens in affected communities.  The closest siren is located adjacent to the SAC. Please do not call the university police or campus administration for information on what the sirens mean. Seek shelter immediately!

A few choice safety tips:

• Avoid exterior windows and skylights when moving to shelter areas. 
• If you can't get to a safer area get under a desk or other object to avoid flying debris.
