You’re invited! Paddle with the Provost May 18

University of Wisconsin-Parkside Provost Terry Brown recently issued the following invitation:

Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to invite you to a "Paddle with the Provost" from 1-4 p.m. on Friday, May 18, at UW-Parkside's Root River Environmental Education Community Center (REC) in Racine. We will be joined by State Representative Cory Mason and together we will explore the Root River and then discuss ways in which our faculty, staff and students can more effectively connect the campus to this wonderful community resource.

Our gathering on May 18 will begin with a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony to kick-off the start of our fifth summer season at the REC. Racine Mayor John Dickert will join us for the festivities to celebrate this unique partnership between the City of Racine and UW-Parkside. Following the ribbon cutting, we will get aboard kayaks and canoes for an hour-long exploration of the local habitat. We will conclude with a discussion on the front deck of the REC as we consider together how to make the most of this ripe environment for engaged scholarship.

I would like to encourage you to also invite a student who you think would be especially interested in joining us for this opportunity. There is limited space for paddlers, so please register soon with the Center for Community Partnerships by contacting Ruth Tylock at ruth.tylock@uwp.edu or 595-2637.

If you are not available on May 18, I encourage you to visit the REC at some point this summer to explore the river, rain gardens, trails, and surrounding vegetation that characterize this special urban oasis. Learn more about the REC on our web site.

Let's continue to work together to impact the knowledge, skills, and experiences of members, and ourselves.
