16 English majors inducted to Sigma Tau Delta

By Kelsey Hoff

University of Wisconsin-Parkside English students gathered with faculty, staff, administration, and friends Wednesday, May 2, to celebrate the induction of 16 new members into the campus' Tau Psi chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society. Member Jon Barajas served as master of ceremonies and President Christy McCarter welcomed guest speakers Dean Yohnk, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Jay McRoy, English Department chair and Sigma Tau Delta member during the program at the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities.

Yohnk encouraged the students with quotes from famous authors and his own experiences teaching English and literary criticism, most recently in the UW-Parkside Theater Arts Department. This led to a short meditation on the word "fellowship." He told members no matter what stereotypes are thrust on English scholars, reading and writing are the most important skills they will ever learn.

McRoy shared his excitement for the event and the presence of so many intelligent individuals. He honored the inductees as "vibrant, interesting, and insightful."

Besides the induction of new members (shown below), the event also served as occasion to present the annual Sigma Tau Delta awards and the organization's new officers. Dr. Teresa Coronado was honored with the Teaching Excellence Award, Stefanie Molinaro received the Academic Excellence Award, Christy McCarter received the Student Leadership Award, and Dr. Suzanne Swiderski received the Presidential Honor. New officers presented were Emily Harring as president, Danielle Rose as vice-president, Adrienne Trumbo as treasurer, and Libby Chernouski as secretary. They pledged to uphold Sigma Tau Delta's motto: "Sincerity, Truth, Design."

New Sigma Tau Delta members are Alexandria Binanti, Libby Chernouski, Jessica Dickman, Danielle Rose, Colin Flanigan, Mary Fogerty, Emil Herring, Megan Manley, Brian Maseman, David Myers, Caleigh Nixon, Nicole Marks-Pencak, Jessina Pipes, Monica Scholle, Adrienne Trumbo, and Brittany Wiegman.
