You've probably noticed the colorful umbrellas hanging in Main Place of Wyllie Hall and in the Brookwood Entrance of the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities. You may also have noticed the numbers affixed to each which allowed people to vote for their favorite design.
The votes are now in and tabulated, and the bistro-themed bumbershoot created by Jennie Filippone, Karen Sorensen, and their children garnered the most votes. Authentic right down to the chewing gum stuck to the bottom of the bistro "table," this umbrella, which was number 41, collected 67 votes. UW-Parkside student Katie Gentner's hole-filled umbrella (#31) took second with 45 votes edging David Holmes' colorful creation (umbrella #7) with 44 votes.
The winning entry was conceived and constructed by our colleague Jennie Filippone and her children Jai, Sam, and Dillon Jensen, and by Karen Sorensen and her daughter Hannah Sorensen. A special hanging device to bear the weight of the umbrella table was created by Keith Harris and Kevin Nelson with Nelson preparing and installing the chewing gum accoutrement on the underside of the umbrella table.
If you haven't seen the umbrella art display as yet, it's worth a special trip to The Rita and Main Place.
