Re: Kenosha News Letter to the Editor

A letter to the editor in the Kenosha News, Tuesday, June 5, reported that a cougar had been sighted north of Petrifying Springs County Park.

According to officials from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), cougars have been confirmed in Burlington and Mukwonago, but none have been confirmed this far east in Racine or Kenosha counties. DNR agents are investigating the report.

We value our natural setting, and that means sharing space with various animals that live in the wild. Please be aware of your surroundings when you make use of natural or remote areas around campus.

DNR officials say that cougars do not adapt well to urban areas (unlike coyotes, for example), and typically do not approach humans. Cougars will, however, approach smaller animals including dogs and cats. Should the DNR confirm a report of any potentially dangerous wildlife in our area we will update the campus community.

Please direct any questions to UW-Parkside Police and Public Safety.
