Our Brewer scholars “shocked,” “excited” by honor

Sierra West called it "a pretty surreal feeling;" Adam Voss said, "I was excited to hear I was the chosen recipient."

Both University of Wisconsin-Parkside students were recently selected as Selig Scholars by the Milwaukee Brewers Community Foundation. They joined 13 other scholarship recipients during an on-field ceremony June 29 prior to the Brewers/ Arizona Diamondbacks.

"It was a pretty surreal feeling being on the field next to some of the players and being recognized by the fans," West said. "The Brewers Community Foundation does amazing work in the community and I am so blessed and very thankful for this opportunity. It was an experience I will never forget."

West, a 2012 graduate who is pursuing a master of business administration degree, applied for the Selig Scholarship online submitting the required essay, transcripts, and a resume. She received a one-year scholarship through funds donated by Brewers' players like Ryan Braun, Yovani Gallardo, Mat Gamel, and Carlos Gomez.

Voss applied for the Michael J. Bonan Scholarship through his work: he serves in the Brewers clubhouse as a batboy, a position similar to that held by Bonan who died in 2008 at the age of 22.

"Unfortunately I never had the pleasure of meeting Michael because he passed away before I was hired, but everyone that knew him dearly misses him. His family set up the scholarship in his honor," Voss said. "I did have the honor of meeting them and realized why everyone missed Michael. They were one of the nicest families I have ever met."

Like Voss, West has a team connection having previously worked as an intern for the team's Corporate Marketing Department. She admits to reading the letter "multiple times" to convince herself she had actually won the scholarship.

Voss, a Fitness Management major, hopes to use his UW-Parkside degree to change jobs in the clubhouse. His ambition is to become "a trainer with a professional team, if not the Brewers themselves."

Congratulations to UW-Parkside Selig Scholars Sierra West and Adam Voss!
