Upward Bound students “amazed” by D.C. visit

Two Kenosha high school students affiliated with the UW-Parkside Upward Bound program had what they called a "life changing experience" in Washington, D.C. earlier this year. Senior Sam Wesley from Tremper High School and Jessica Ocampo from Reuther High School were selected to represent Wisconsin at the National Student Leadership Congress.

Hosted by the Council for Opportunity in Education, the six-day conference focused on four key elements:

  • Establishing a national network of emerging leaders from students served by TRIO programs
  • Developing service-oriented leaders, empowered and skilled to serve their communities and the nation
  • Conducting sessions with policy-makers and educational leaders, and
  • Attending workshops on decision-making and problem-solving, national service, leadership styles, attributes, and skills; the political process and coalition building, multi-culturalism and diversity

The National Student Leadership Congress was held June 9-14.
