UW-Parkside hosts field trip to Milwaukee Art Museum Nov. 9
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside invites area residents to experience some of the greatest works ever produced by American artists during a field trip to the magnificent Milwaukee Art Museum. The trip is Tuesday, Nov. 9. It departs from campus at 9 a.m. and returns at approximately 4 p.m.
In its relatively short history, America has produced a vibrant and diverse visual tradition. During the exhibition "Masterpieces of American Art, 1770-1920," visitors have an unprecedented opportunity to celebrate America's best in a visually stunning exhibition of 90 paintings and sculptures on loan from the Detroit Institute of Arts. These pieces depict a period when American art was born and came into its own.
The show includes masterworks like John Singleton Copley's "Watson and the Shark," "Cotopaxi" by Frederic Church, and Winslow Homer's "Defiance: Inviting A Shot Before Petersburg." Also featured are still life master Raphaelle Peale; landscape artists Thomas Cole and Martin Johnson Heade; sculptor Hiram Powers; painters George Caleb Bingham, Eastman Johnson, and Thomas Eakins; Impressionists John Singer Sargent, Childe Hassam, and Mary Cassatt; Ashcan School artists Robert Henri and George Bellows, and many more.
The "Masterpieces of American Art, 1770-1920" exhibit is an audio tour which begins promptly at 10 am. Following the tour, participants are free to enjoy the other aspects of the museum until 3 p.m.
Cost of the trip is $16 which includes transportation and entrance fee. Tickets must be purchased by Monday, Nov. 1, 2004.
