Now showing: Three exhibitions at campus galleries

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside art galleries have opened their doors with three new exhibitions to start the 2012-2013 academic year. Enjoy the best artwork from throughout Wisconsin, witness the beauty to be found in other people's trash, and learn to steal like an artist.

The Wisconsin Visual Arts Juried Exhibition brings the state's best artwork to campus. Wisconsin Visual Arts is the state's oldest and largest artists' association. The exhibition shows in the Fine Arts Gallery of the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities through Oct. 13.

Down the hall, Minneapolis artist Michael Kareken's "Salvaged Views" offers a glimpse of the urban landscape typically hidden from the casual observer. Kareken's drawings and paintings, artwork created from thousands of photographs he took in busy outdoor recycling centers, offer unique images in muted earth tones. "Salvaged Views" is in the UW-Parkside Foundation Gallery through Nov 17.

"Steal Like an Artist," in the E.H. Mathis Gallery through Nov. 3, is newspaper blackout poetry inspired by Austin Kleon. Taking its name from Kleon's bestselling book, the exhibition features poems by Kenosha and Racine poets who used permanent markers to blackout words on the pages of local newspapers, creating "do-it-yourself" verse.
Opening receptions for each exhibition are Saturday, Sept. 8, from 2-5 p.m. with awards in the Wisconsin Visual Arts show announced at 3 p.m. Regular gallery hours are Monday noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday/Wednesday noon to 6 p.m., Thursday noon to 8 p.m., and Saturday noon to 4 p.m. The galleries are closed Fridays and Sundays. Admission is free.
