I scream, you scream: Ice Cream Social 2012

UW-P students start the year right...with ice cream!

UW-P students start the year right...with ice cream!

On a hot day in September, what could be better than a scoop (or two, or three!) of ice cream? Nothing except, maybe, some friends to share in the fun.

That's exactly the thinking behind UW-Parkside's semester-opening Ice Cream Social. Held this year on the Student Center Bridge during the first day of fall semester classes, the social brought students, faculty, and staff together to get acquainted and reacquainted in a place where the toughest question was: Chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry?

Among the scoopers this year was UW-Parkside's new Dean of Students Tammy McGuckin. She was hard pressed to think of a better?or tastier?place to get to know the people she'll be serving.

"It's a great way to see the students and let them see us," McGuckin said while ladling a mound of chocolate into a bowl. "I'm just getting to know them and learning about how things are going on their first day of classes. I'm thrilled to see the students back and feel the life on campus. I'm enjoying it!"

Those on the receiving end of the ice cream exchange, students like senior Helima Phelps, like the relaxed atmosphere surrounding the social.

"It's a fun thing," said Phelps. "To come and get some ice cream; it's a laid back kind of thing."

UW-Parkside's favorite bruin, Ranger D. Bear, was on hand to make sure no ice cream went to waste. RDB need not to have worried. On a hot day in September, nary a drop was wasted.
