Arts Alive! presents the swing of 5 By Design Sept. 27! |
The Arts Alive! series at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside kicks off the 2012-2013 season in swinging style Thursday, Sept. 27 with Five By Design's "Club Swing." Presented in the Main Stage Theatre of the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities, this evening of great music begins at 7:30. The campus is located at 900 Wood Rd. in Kenosha.
"This is such a great way to start the season! Swing music is really universal--you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn't like it," said series director Stephanie Sirovatka-Marshall. "Not only does Five By Design perform this music magnificently, there's a story to bring the evening together and that makes it even more fun."
The once-magnificent night spot called Club Swing has fallen on hard times and now the wrecking ball is poised to strike her down. Can plucky everyman Joe Sullivan, the club's chief mixologist, prevent this tragedy from occurring? The flare of a long-forgotten neon sign banishes the gloom, Benny Goodman's "Bugle Call Rag" breaks the silence, and Club Swing, in all its art deco glory, is back!
Five By Design's quintet of harmonious voice, including Lorie Carpenter-Niska, Catherine Scott, Kurt Niska, Michael Swedberg, and Terrence Niska, lovingly recreate the songs, events, and personalities that defined American popular culture when "Swing was King." Whether performing their seductive arrangement of Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine," Spike Jones' madcap parody of "Cocktails for Two," or the show's blockbuster finale of Louis Prima's "Sing, Sing, Sing," Five By Design delivers a seemingly effortless blend of music and theatrics. Dinner jacket and evening gowns are optional.
Tickets for Five By Design's "Club Swing" are $29.50 and can be ordered by visiting www.uwp.edu keyword tickets or by calling 262-595-2307.
