Update: AIDS Memorial Quilt & related programs

AIDS Memorial Quilt at UW-Parkside Oct. 22-Nov. 4.

The Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt arrives at the UW-Parkside campus this month and will be on exhibition Oct. 22-Nov. 4. A dozen panels, each a 12-foot square, will be displayed in the Fine Arts Gallery of The Rita. Admission is free.

A variety of performances, discussions, and literary events are planned in conjunction with the exhibition. Each program is free and open to everyone. They are:  

• Oct. 22: The UW-Parkside Peer Health Educators student organization speaks about HIV/AIDS both in the college and general population. Students will share facts about how to protect yourself, where to get tested, how to reduce stigma, and myths, and facts of the disease. Informational pamphlets and condoms will be available free of charge. This program begins at noon in Fine Arts Gallery.
• Oct. 24: Gallery Reading Group "Naming Names: The Art of Memory and the Names Project AIDS Quilt" (Critical Inquiry, 1993); join UW-Parkside faculty, staff, and students in a discussion of Peter Hawkins' classic essay. This program begins at noon in Fine Arts Gallery.
• Oct. 26 & Oct. 28: "The AIDS Quilt Songbook" is performed by the UW-Parkside Opera Workshop under the direction of Ami Bouterse. These performances feature Alvaro Garcia on viola and Fumi Nishikiori on piano with narration by Tara Pedersen. The Oct. 26 program beings at noon in Fine Arts Gallery; the Oct. 28 program begins at 7:30 p.m. in Frances Bedford Concert Hall.
• Oct. 31: The UW-Parkside LGBTQ Resource Center presents "Table Talk: HIV/AIDS in the LGBTQ Community." This session focuses on HIV and AIDS in the LGBTQ Community. Student facilitators present questions to engage the audience in thoughtful discussion of the issues. This program begins at noon in Fine Arts Gallery.
• Nov. 2, 3, & 4: FreshINK, Parkside Theatre's staged reading series, presents Dr. Dean Yohnk's "Voices of the Quilt." Drawn from narratives written by those who lost loved ones to the disease, this program begins at 7:30 p.m. each evening in Fine Arts Gallery.
• Nov. 4: A professional performance of "The AIDS Quilt Songbook;"featuring baritone Kurt Ollmann who recorded the original performance of "Songbook" at its premiere and guest artist William Lavonis, tenor. Faculty members Ami Bouterse, soprano; Allison Hull, mezzo-soprano; Alvaro Garcia, viola; and Fumi Nishikiori, piano also perform. New compositions by UW-Parkside alumnus Ayesu Lartey and Indiana University South Bend Professor Jorge Muniz, both commissioned for this event, are presented. This program begins at 3:30 p.m. in the Frances Bedford Concert Hall.
