It started early on Saturday, Oct. 6, and it continued right through a busy schedule that lasted until well after dark. "It" was UW-Parkside's Parents & Families Day. And for the 32 families who took part, this day filled with activities helped the participants do exactly what the university's First Year Experience wants every student--and parent--to do: Connect, Explore, Aspire.

The first opportunity to connect came at The Rita.

"We began our morning in the galleries with Patricia Briggs, ate lunch in the Brickstone, and then many of them went out to the carnival that Student Activities hosted for Fall Fest," said First Year Experience Coordinator Andrea Zick. "The goldfish and Ferris Wheel were a huge hit!"

The afternoon was a time for families to explore the university. Some families embarked on the nature hike led by students Robert Bhatia and Dior Jemison; others tried student Jake Retasket's mini-course on using Photoshop; pumpkins were carved, dodge ball was played, dough was kneaded (after all, what student doesn't need dough?), and ceramic bowls were painted to benefit a worthy cause. In other words, a great time was had by parents and students.

Students and parents closed the day with words of inspiration about their aspirations. UW-Parkside Chancellor Debbie Ford addressed the dinner audience in the Alumni Room of the Student Center encouraging them to become what they aspire to be.

Afterward, Zick said the collaborative effort of staff and students resulted in an extraordinary event.

"Many offices and students came together to help us provide a great day for our Ranger Families!"
