Gurnack returns to UW-P with election perceptions

The Election Experience is a hit! Political Science Professor Peggy James reports programs like "Waking the Sleeping Giant," on the influence Latino votes will have Nov. 6, the visit by Marquette University pollster Charles Franklin, and her own program "U.S. Foreign Policy: Would Romney be different than Obama?" have been well attended and prompted lively exchanges of ideas.

Now, like a third party candidate, think Ross Perot in 1992 or John Anderson in 1980, our colleague Anne Gurnack is staging her own election preview tonight as a Friends of the Library program. Titled "Presidential Election 2012: Policies and Postures," Dr. Gurnack looks at the public policy approaches each presidential candidate has outlined during the campaign--including jobs and the economy.

A Professor Emerita of Political Science currently serving as a visiting professor at UW-Milwaukee, Dr. Gurnack also discusses the messaging and framing of the candidates as well as the strategies employed by the campaigns.

Dr. Gurnack is a frequent guest on Wisconsin public radio and television as a political analyst and commentator. Her program begins at 7 p.m. in the Overlook Lounge on the second floor of the library.

More Election Experiences

Add another perspective to Election 2012. UW-Parkside Economics Professor Norm Cloutier presents the Election Experience lecture "Trick or Treat? What are the Recent Labor Market Data Telling Us?" Wednesday, Oct. 31.

While the official unemployment rate in September was 7.8 percent, a recent political ad claimed the "real" unemployment rate is nearly 19 percent, and some political commentators have suggested the recent employment stats were fabricated, while others claim they are a signal of continued recovery. During his lecture, Dr. Cloutier reviews the basic measures of labor market performance and offers historical perspective on the most recent recession and current conditions.

"Understanding these measures and the economic forces that shape their values is critical to your evaluation of political rhetoric on the economy," Dr. Cloutier said.
"Trick or Treat? What are the Recent Labor Market Data Telling Us?" with Norm Cloutier begins Wednesday, Oct. 31 at noon, in the Student Center Hickory Room. Admission is free.
