UW-Parkside's annual involvement in the national "Make a Difference Day" was held Saturday, Oct. 27. This year's chilly but sunny day had 90 students participate in giving back to the Kenosha and Racine communities.
With the help from other community volunteers, students assisted 12 local organizations with cleaning, painting, and organizing. One group, in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity, was even able to help build a home.
In total, 19 student clubs, athletic teams, and organizations represented their campus in this national day of helping others.
The Outstanding Participation honor was awarded to the Ladies of Gamma Alpha Omega in 1st place, UW-Parkside Track & Field Teams in 2nd place, and Parkside Asian Organization in 3rd place.
Teresita Barrera, president of Gamma Alpha Omega, comments on their organization's experience this year, saying, "We pride ourselves in having as many people as possible to participate." She continues, "We want [students] to see the opportunities that they have when it comes to helping others. The smallest deed can come a long way."
This sorority demonstrates how volunteering has become a tradition for our campus. "As far as we can remember, this has been something we do every year. Our engaged alumna can answer this best. They still come out and participate with us! At times, we bring our children along."
We look forward to next year's Make a Difference Day, but until then, our campus will stay busy making a difference everyday.
