Musical December to Remember continues at UW-P

The UW-Parkside Music Department continues its near concert-a-day pace through Dec. 8 with an Arts Alive! performance Monday by the Master Singers, Tuesday by the Jazz Ensemble, Wednesday by the guitar and woodwind ensembles, Friday by the Wind Ensemble and Community Band, and Saturday by the U.S. Navy Band Great Lakes Wind Ensemble. Each concert is held in the Frances Bedford Concert Hall of the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for the Arts and Humanities.        

Monday, Dec. 3, the Arts Alive! performance of Glenn Burleigh's "Nguzo Saba Suite" fills Bedford Hall with a Kwanzaa-inspired celebration of the season. Master Singers are joined by the Choral Arts Society of Southeast Wisconsin for the program which starts at 7:30 p.m. Conducted by Dr. James B. Kinchen, the program also includes traditional holiday favorites including "I Saw Three Ships," "O Magnum Mysterium," and others. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 7:30 p.m., the UW-Parkside Jazz Ensemble, directed by Russ Johnson, is in concert at Bedford Hall. Johnson, whose reputation continues to burgeon in Chicago and around the Midwest, leads his ensemble in a program that includes some holiday favorites. Expect festive! Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors.

Wednesday, Dec. 5, the free Noon Concert features the UW-Parkside Guitar Ensemble and UW-Parkside Woodwind Ensemble.

Friday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m., conductor Mark Eichner leads the UW-Parkside Wind Ensemble and Community Band in a rare Friday evening performance. The Wind Ensemble features music by Leonard Bernstein, Ned Rorem, Czech composer Jindrich Feld, and "The Mad Major," a march by Kenneth Alford. The Community Band performs music by Alfred Reed, Edward German, a march by Jean Sibelius, and music from Gian Carlo Menotti's Christmas opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors." The groups combine for a holiday finale of "White Christmas," "Baby it's Cold Outside," and "Three Carols for Christmas" featuring student vocalists Megan Wilson and Bradly Lessen. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors.

Saturday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m., the U.S. Navy Band Great Lakes presents "Sounds of the Season," its holiday concert. Unwrapped "Toys for Tots" donations are accepted before the concert and Santa makes a special appearance. This concert is free and open to the public. Seating is general admission and tickets are limited to four per family. For tickets, call the UW-Parkside Fine Arts Box Office at 262-595-2564.
