It's been 18 years since Glenn Burleigh's celebration of Kwanzaa, the "Nguzo Saba Suite," debuted here at UW-Parkside. Since then, the suite has been performed worldwide. But it's hard to imagine it ever being presented more beautifully or in a more attractive, more acoustically accurate setting than it was this week at UW-Parkside. Dr. James Kinchen led two Arts Alive! performances of the piece Sunday afternoon and Monday evening in the Frances Bedford Concert Hall of The Rita. The web site devoted to Burleigh's music credits "Dr. Kinchen's vision" as the catalyst for the "Nguzo Saba Suite." It was commissioned by the UW-Parkside Choirs and Dr. Kinchen, and had its debut in 1994. Master Singers, a chorus of voices from the community, was supplemented for both performances by the Choral Arts Society of Southeast Wisconsin and for Sunday's program by the Stephen Bull Fine Arts Elementary School Chorale.
