“Lughnasa” picked for Kennedy Center performances

Special performances of "Dancing at Lughnasa" Fri./Sat.

Parkside Theatre's production of "Dancing at Lughnasa" will be showcased at the prestigious Kennedy Center American College Theatre (KCACTF) Region III Festival. Selected for this honor from more than 40 productions staged at Midwest universities, this gentle Irish drama has its final three performances Friday, Dec. 7, at 10 a.m., and Dec. 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 900 Wood Rd., Kenosha.

Calling the selection "an incredible honor" and "a great reward to the students, faculty, and staff" working on the play, Theatre Arts Department Chair Lisa Kornetsky said individual performances were also honored by the KCACTF.

"Members of the KCACTF regional executive committee attended our final dress rehearsal. Not only was our production selected, but our director Jamie Cheatham, set designer Jody Sekas, and student lighting designer Chris Payne all received merit awards," Kornetsky said. "In addition, students Brittany Boeche, Laura Chartrand, and Michael Dalberg were nominated in the Irene Ryan Acting Competition."   

Loosely based on the lives of playwright Brian Friel's mother and aunts, "Dancing at Lughnasa" is a bittersweet tale of past remembrances as seen through the eyes of narrator Michael Evans who, at the time of the play, is seven years old. The play takes place during the last days of summer when love briefly seems possible for three of the five Mundy sisters.

The cast includes Kenjamin Lafayette as Michael, Shanna Theiste as Kate Mundy, Brittany Boeche as Maggie, Laura Chartrand as Agnes, Katlin Kobernick as Rose, Rachel Sandlin as Christina, Michael Dalberg as Father Jack, and Ethan Hall as Gerry Evans.
