"No single person has had a greater positive impact on students at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside than Jan Ocker." Chancellor Debbie Ford's statement summed up the more than 40 years Jan Ocker served UW-Parkside, the first 29 as financial aid director and the last 12 as a senior financial aid counselor assisting current Director of Scholarships and Financial Aid Randy McCready. His co-workers and university friends celebrated Ocker's retirement Thursday, Dec. 12, with a reception in Wyllie Hall. McCready said Ocker's official hire date at UW-Parkside was July 1, 1967, and that he served as director of financial aid until 1996. He returned to campus in 2000. "He was a wonderful mentor for me and I have appreciated his wise counsel during the 12 years he served as 'interim' senior financial aid counselor," McCready said. Summing up a career that spanned six decades, Ocker said he came to work every day because, "I just loved helping students." Along with his campus well-wishers, Ocker was honored with a commendation from the Wisconsin Higher Educational Aids Board.
