February brings Master Singers spring rehearsals

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Master Singers, led by conductor James B. Kinchen Jr., invites area vocalists to join the ensemble. Weekly Monday evening rehearsals have resumed for the spring semester and new and returning members are invited to come and sing. Two concerts are scheduled for spring semester.

Saying Master Singers is an "important 'town-gown' ensemble that places excellence in choral performance within the reach of everyone who cares to reach for it," Kinchen said he places great importance on attending rehearsals.

"The rehearsal is the setting in which we are able to come together as a musical community and, in the words of Vince Lombardi, 'pursue perfection so that we might catch excellence,'" Kinchen stated, adding, "we perform quality music from all style periods not simply to 'do it,' but seeking the satisfaction of doing it well!"

This semester's musical theme is "Choral Treasures," and affords a sampling of some of the beloved pieces in the repertoire. Examples include Gounod's "O, Divine Redeemer," "Anthem for Spring," an adaptation of the "Regina Coeli" scene and chorus from the opera "Cavalleria Rusticana," the effusive "Italian Street Song" of Victor Herbert, and a medley from the Broadway musical "South Pacific."

Spring semester concerts are scheduled for Sunday, May 5 and Sunday, May 12. Rehearsals are held Mondays from 7 to 9:45 p.m. in room D-164 of the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities. Performances will be held in the acoustically perfect Frances Bedford Concert Hall.

All non-students can participate on a no-fee, no-credit basis; university credit is also available. For more information, email Professor Kinchen at kinchen@uwp.edu or call him at 262-595-2111.
